On Thursday morning two guys before me went through the subway station entrance without paying anything. The ticket taker looked weird when she was looking at the ticket I was holding. Then she said “Put it in the box and go through.”

What the heck is going on here?

I got the answer five minutes later from the newspaper.

The TTC and its union have fought over security issues, health benefits and job evaluation. Now the ongoing battle erupted into a job action. The union announce that “It will be up to the travelling public whether or not they want to make a contribution to the box.”

According the report, ninety-nine per cent of the people paid their fare whether they knew they could get on the subway trains, streetcars or buses unchallenged or not, even though most of them thought that the .75 in cash is too high for the riding.

Actually some drivers stopped the people who had tried to duck the fare when the others not. A TTC driver said, “It’s up to you to be honest or not. If you don’t want to be then have a nice day.”

It reminded me the police job action which occurred a couple months ago. The police had not charged thousands of illegal parking cases during those days. And the speeding drivers didn’t need to worry about losing their credits any more.

The TTC chief general manager said it is the drivers’ responsibility to collect fares, and said 60 cents of every dollar collected goes to pay wages and benefits. The shortfall of fare would lead to less service or tapping taxpayers for more subsidies.

But it looks we don't need to worry about that. The traffic accidents didn't increase when the police were on strike. Three years ago when we had no lights, people could still have smooth driving on road. At night people stayed outside longer than before what had made the night to be safe and warm.

Yes, there are jerks in our midst. They are a minority. We own the system. If you try to take advantage of another, you will lose yours.

We pay up. That’s us.
